The best sunset in the Dinagat Islands: why every Laaganan tour ends on the Basilisa peak
A standard island-hopping day drops you back in San Jose at 3:30 PM with nothing planned. Here is what we built for the hours after that.
Here is a thing about a Dinagat Islands trip that nobody tells you when you book the boat.
A standard island-hopping day puts you back in San Jose at around 3:30 in the afternoon. Then the day just… stops. You have an entire evening, you are three hours from anywhere, and the tour that brought you here is over.
Every tour we run finishes on the Basilisa peak instead. This is why.
The last hour of light is the reason people book
Our own packing list says it plainly: bring a camera, because the light between 5:00 and 6:00 PM is the reason people book this.
The peak looks west across the Dinagat range. Departure times shift through the year so that guests are always seated at least thirty minutes before sundown — you are not arriving as the light goes, and you are not standing at a viewpoint checking your watch.
Then you eat, sitting down, at the top.
How the evening actually runs
Every sunset combo follows the same shape:
| Time | |
|---|---|
| 4:30 PM | Pickup from San Jose Port or your accommodation |
| 5:10 PM | Arrival at Laaganan Skybar & Restaurant, Basilisa peak |
| 5:15 PM | Seated for golden hour |
| 5:45 PM | Sunset over the Dinagat range |
| 6:15 PM | Your set menu or platter is served |
| 8:00 PM | Return transfer |
| 8:40 PM | Drop-off in San Jose |
Round-trip transport is included. You are not arranging a ride up a mountain at dusk, and you are not arranging one back down at eight at night.
Which one to book
| What you get | Price | |
|---|---|---|
| Sunset Ride & Dine | Shuttle + Golden Hour Set | ₱649 / guest |
| Skyline Sunset Combo | Shuttle + Skyline Sunset Set | ₱849 / guest |
| Laaganan Premium Sunset | Shuttle + Premium Set | ₱1,099 / guest |
| Barkada Sunset Combo | Shuttle + sharing platter, up to 5 | ₱2,699 / group |
| Grand Sunset Feast | Shuttle + flagship feast, up to 10 | ₱6,499 / group |
Combos need a minimum of five guests. Below that you can book the shuttle on its own at ₱1,500 round trip for one to six people.
Couples and celebrations tend to take the Premium Sunset — butter shrimp or beef caldereta, the Blue Horizon signature cocktail, mango float.
Groups do better on a platter. The Barkada Combo is wings, sisig skyfries, dynamites, kropek and a beer bucket for the table; the Grand Feast is sutukil, crispy pata, flame chicken and a bar tower for up to ten.
Why the food is itemised
Every package lists the à-la-carte value of the set it includes — ₱422, ₱632, ₱933 — because "dinner included" tells you nothing. Each set is built from real menu items at their real menu prices and sold below the sum, so the saving is a number you can check rather than a claim you have to trust.
It runs when the sea does not
The sunset combos involve no boat. That makes them the one thing on your itinerary the Coast Guard cannot cancel — and the obvious fallback if your island-hopping day gets called off.
More than one guest has had a boat tour suspended in the morning and salvaged the whole trip with an evening on the mountain.
Making more of the afternoon
If you want more than the drive up, the Sunset Heritage Tour picks up at 1:30 PM and takes in the PBMA Divine Master Shrine, the Island Castle and Yamashiro before the peak — ₱1,599 per guest, minimum four, entrance fees and donations included.
Before you come up
- A light jacket. The peak cools quickly once the sun is down, and it catches people out every week.
- Comfortable shoes if you are stopping at the viewing decks — short walks on uneven ground.
- A camera.
