Island-hopping or inland: which Dinagat tour is right for you?
The two are genuinely different days out, and one of them keeps running when the sea does not. Here is how to choose.
Most visitors arrive assuming a trip to the Dinagat Islands means a boat. It usually does — but it does not have to, and the difference matters more than people expect.
The short answer
If you have one day and you want water, book the sea. If you have one day and you want to be certain the tour actually runs, book the land. If you have a full day and want both, that is exactly what the Complete Tour is.
What an island-hopping day looks like
Our Basilisa route leaves Don Ruben Port at 8:00 AM and works through Cabacungan Cove, Duyos, Bitaog Beach — where lunch is served on the sand — and Pagkawasan Garden Beach, returning to San Jose in the early afternoon.
Included in the sea legs:
- Boat rental and boatman
- All island entrance, cottage and docking fees
- A set lunch on the beach
- A tour coordinator for the day
The catch is the one nobody mentions until the morning of your trip: sea legs operate only with Philippine Coast Guard clearance. If sailing is suspended, the day does not happen. We will move you to the inland circuit, reschedule, or refund the sea portion — but the boat is not going out.
What an inland day looks like
The Sunset Heritage Tour is a 90 to 100 kilometre round trip from San Jose that takes in the landmarks that actually define the province: the PBMA Divine Master Shrine, the Island Castle, and the Provincial Capitol — which is built in the shape of a ship. It then climbs to two ridge viewpoints and finishes at the Basilisa peak for sunset and dinner.
It departs at 12:30 PM and returns at 8:45 PM, and it runs in all but severe weather.
The half day nobody plans for
Here is the practical thing. A standard island-hopping tour puts you back in San Jose at around 3:30 PM. That leaves an entire evening with nothing in it.
A sunset combo exists for exactly that gap: pickup at 4:30 PM, sunset from the peak, and a set meal at Laaganan. It is the thing to book after you have already done your boat day, not instead of it.
Choosing by who you are travelling with
- A couple with one evening — a sunset combo. Least planning, no early start.
- A family with young children — the inland circuit. No boat transfers, and children aged 5 to 10 pay half the adult rate.
- A barkada with one full day — the Complete Tour, or a group platter combo in the evening.
- A group of ten or more — the Ultimate 3D2N covers both island-hopping routes and every heritage landmark.
Whichever you choose
Bring a light jacket. The peak cools quickly once the sun is down, and it surprises people every single week.
